In an effort to reduce the number of collisions, Volvo has installed several accident-avoidance measures on the models found in the Smythe Volvo showroom in Summit, NJ. We've heard the technologies have been rather helpful for many drivers and we agree. But the Swedish automaker believes there is always more that can be done, and they intend to make the already-intact system safer.
Volvo wants to increase the speed at which the Pedestrian Detection system can apply the brakes. This offers you coverage should a person walk in front of your moving vehicle. Right now, it is at 19 miles-per-hour and Volvo wants to increase it to 31. That's already the case on the European Volvo, so hopefully it shouldn't pose much of a challenge to do so on other models in the new Volvo lineup.
Volvo has also made animal safety a priority as well, and doesn't just want to detect humans with the Pedestrian Detection system. The goal is that this component will aid in reducing collisions involving larger wildlife like deer, elk, and moose.
This system won't only accommodate you in keeping your vehicle intact through many miles of high-quality and luxurious driving enjoyment, in fact it also can reduce insurance costs. According to IIHS, Volvo S60 drivers in models outfitted with City Safety submitted 16 percent less insurance claims. In addition, Geno Effler, Volvo North America VP of Communications said that lobby insurance companies will often give discounts to drivers who have measures like City Safety and Pedestrian Detection equipped onboard.
