You've probably seen it by now: Volvo's newest marketing ad has gone viral.
We're talking about action star Van Damme's performance atop of two Volvo trucks as they drive backward. Believe us, if you haven't seen it yet, you'll want to catch it now: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7FIvfx5J10
Now that you've seen it, let's discuss. Clearly, aside from seeing an incredible straight spit performance from the 53-year old, we get to see the seamlessness that is Volvo's dynamic steering. If you're familiar with the Swedish automaker's intense commitment to safety like we do at Smythe Volvo, you know that they wouldn't perform such an incredible stunt without the impeccable precision of the new steering system.
It sure created a buzz, to say the least. The video on YouTube attracts over 50 million views and counting. In addition to giving the public an incredible visual of how well the system works, the video's also done quite the magic for the automaker's marketing efforts.
"This is completely unique," explains Barbara Lippert, Mediapost.com advertising columnist. "IT's an incredible human way to show the equilibrium of the steering of the truck....anyone who knows anyone who drives a truck or owns a truck will mention it to them. People love this stuff."1
If you're still squinting your eyes to see what tricks the company used, you can stop your search. Volvo's spokesman Vihelmsson said that the only thing added was a safety line attacted to Van Damme. The shot we see in the video is real and was done without any breaks.
You know what else is pretty amazing? You guessed it: the new Volvo lineup here in Summit, NJ. Stop in and check it out when you have a moment. We'll be here to serve you when you're ready, and we're also eager to hear your thoughts on our blog, which--if you haven't already--is a great thing to subscribe to if you like consistent Volvo updates!
