One of our mechanics here at Smythe Volvo Cars in Summit, NJ might have said your engine blew a gasket. It happens, and while it sounds terrible, you can have it fixed easily. An engine gasket seals the engine components. These gaskets help the engine hold in fluids such as oil, maintain appropriate pressure, and stop dirt and debris from entering the engine.

The combustion engines used on most cars, SUVs, and trucks use about 250 different components. Although they are not large, they form one of the most integral parts of the engine. Your head cylinder gaskets ensure your engine can produce energy, horsepower, and torque. Other gaskets work inside the motor or connect the support components to the engine.

The cylinder head gaskets, or just head gaskets, keep gases out of the coolant system. Usually made of copper, they reside between the engine block and cylinder head. Head gaskets do a tough job and eventually wear out. This requires a replacement gasket, so your engine still performs its job. Other gaskets your mechanic may mention include intake and exhaust manifold gaskets, main bearing gaskets, and camshaft gaskets. When any gasket wears out, you must have it replaced immediately otherwise, you will damage your engine.
